From an FDP release I've just received:
JOINT STATEMENT FROM SENATOR GWEN MARGOLIS AND REPRESENTATIVE DAN GELBER
MIAMI BEACH, FL- After serving the residents of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties for 33 years, Senator Gwen Margolis announced today that she would not seek reelection in 2008.
“It is my intention to step aside so that my capable colleague and friend, House Minority Leader Dan Gelber can seek election to my Senate seat” said Senator Margolis.
This announcement comes at the same time that Representative Gelber formally announced his intention to run for the State Senate. “It has been an honor to serve the citizens of northeast Miami-Dade County in the House of Representatives and I hope that as a Senator I will live up to the standard that Senator Margolis has set,” said Representative Gelber.
Senator Margolis was first elected to the Legislature in 1974. Her remarkable years of service include terms as the first female President of the Florida Senate and Chair of the Metro-Dade County Commission. “I have truly enjoyed representing the constituents of Senate District 35,” said Senator Margolis, “But it would be a great loss if a public official with so much to offer our community could not continue his dedication to public service.”
Gelber, who can not run for re-election because of term limits, went on to say that, “Senator Margolis has been both a mentor and a friend and her urging me to run was both gracious on her part, and humbling as she has set the gold standard for public service.”

I typically don't pass along releases, but this is a pretty important piece of information. Besides, Gelber will make an excellent edition to the State Senate.

For those who didn't already know, over the last few weeks, I worked on the Mark Ravenscraft for State Senate District 3 campaign. The primary election was Tuesday and we lost, getting only 35% of the vote. Why? Several reasons.

(Worthy of continued discussion, FP, 6/10/07 - Everyone in Florida needs to know Charlie Dean is no moderate. He had a weak victory Tuesday night. Only 46% of the Republican base wanted Dean as their nominee, while 54% wanted someone else. Dean is as much a moderate as he is a strong candidate. - promoted by Florida Politics)
This Herald-Tribune article isn't the only voice suggesting that Charlie Dean's defeat of Dennis Baxley somehow is a sign that voters are abandoning conservative Republicans and moving to the middle. Except, of course, that this isn't true at all. Why not? Let the article speak for itself:

We'd like to thank him for his time, which is precious considering the primary is Tuesday. Here is a transcript of that chat. This Sunday, June 3, Florida Progressive Coalition will be hosting a chat with Senate District 3 Candidate Mark Ravenscraft at the FPC website. This is a difficult, but winnable race and this will be an opportunity for you -- the bloggers, activists and voters of the state of Florida to get up close and personal with one of the few Democrats running in the upcoming June special elections. Have your questions ready and Mark will answer as many of them as time permits. The chat is open to anyone, although it will be moderated to prevent inappropriate comments and questions, and you don't need to register to participate, just go to the FPC website on Sunday at 7 p.m.
We are attempting to negotiate other chat events with the other Democratic candidates and will let you know about them as soon as we can. In the past we have had chats or interviews with candidates such as Alex Sink, James Walker, Michael Calderin, Samm Simpson and others. FPC is breaking new ground in getting you, the voters of Florida, access to state leaders and we hope this is the beginning of a new tradition in politics in the Sunshine state.
