{First, a cheap plug for my blog Senate Guru.}
As many of you know, over the last five days, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, in partnership with a number of progressive organizations and blogs including Senate Guru, asked those in the netroots, "Should a Draft Sestak movement be created to take on Sen. Arlen Specter in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary?"
The results are in and they are overwhelming. 85% of Pennsylvanian respondents and 86% of respondents nationally want Democratic Congressman Joe Sestak to challenge Arlen Specter in the 2010 Democratic Senate primary. The poll has even gotten the attention of Congressman Sestak, as the PCCC points out:
 | | | "I am honored that so many of you took the time to vote in the recent grassroots Straw Poll. Let me tell you, I and many others were paying attention. If I decide to run it will be in large measure because of the grassroots energy of so many people like you. Until I and my family make that decision, please accept my thanks and my best wishes as you continue be active participants in our people-powered democracy. Thank you so very much!"
Due to such an overwhelming response, a Draft Sestak Fund has been created on ActBlue. To contribute and further encourage Congressman Sestak to enter the race, click on the image below:
 |
If you need any additional motivation to contribute to this effort to draft a real Democrat to oppose Specter in the primary, consider Specter's actions since announcing his Party switch:
1) Specter opposed the Obama budget.
2) Specter opposed the "cramdown" mortgage/bankruptcy reform, siding with banks over families.
3) Specter reiterated his opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act.
4) Specter reiterated his opposition to President Obama's nomination of Dawn Johnsen to the Office of Legal Counsel.
5) Specter announced his support for Republican Norm Coleman over Democratic Senator-elect Al Franken in Minnesota's Senate race.
6) Specter promoted a website that appeared to raise money for cancer research but, in actuality, simply raised money for his campaign.
7) Specter denied reports that he told President Obama that he would be a "loyal Democrat" despite multiple reporters sticking to their story.
The netroots have displayed overwhelming support for Congressman Sestak to take on recently-Republican Arlen Specter. Help the effort by contributing to the Draft Sestak Fund.

The 2008 Florida Democratic Primary is the first "virtual primary" in U.S. history.
It is a unique event in American history, where technology and people power are being used to determine not only who Floridians favor as the Democratic nominee, but today's primary also will play a key role in determining the next president of the United States.
Last year, the Democratic presidential contenders signed a pledge not to campaign in Florida before the primary to punish Florida for violating Democratic National Committee rules and moving the vote in advance of the February 5 barrier set up in 2006.

My convention was fun and interesting. Not like my first, two years ago, when Howard Dean, John Edwards, Barack Obama, Mark Warner and Tom Vilsack were strong orators, stirring the crowd and displaying the strength that the Democrats would present for the 2008 election. It was still only 2005 then, but it was already clear how badly the Republicans were leading this beloved country, and what an opportunity it was for us in the ’06 midterms and the ’08 presidential elections. I made up my mind then as to who was the best presidential candidate. My home blog, however, is neutral, and you have to know me personally to see whose button is on my shirt. I haven’t changed my mind. I’m laying this out so the reader will understand why I’m not upset that the Democratic candidates are staying away from Florida. I don’t need any more information to make up my mind. Those who gnash their teeth about the supposed lack of attention paid to Florida are wasting their dental enamel. Florida will NOT be ignored. Its needs WILL be met. Even if the candidates stay away right up until November 2008, Florida is too important to be left out of the federal budget or limelight. Squealing and wailing is, to me, a sign of insecurity. MORE Also posted on miami-dade-dems.blogspot.com with a photo and other news items from convention

Okay, here is the official ballot for the Netroots Awards. Voting will be open from now until Friday at noon. Please e-mail me your votes at quinnelk@hotmail.com in order to keep ballots secret. I want to try to avoid hurt feelings and unnecessary conflict. Votes after 12 p.m. on Friday I won't even see, since I'll be on the road...
The competition was pretty strong, particularly considering the fact that the nomination period was necessarily brief. Next year, nominations will be open longer. Still, we had 46 people nominate 208 web sites, individuals and groups in the 13 categories. Please pick only one choice in each category and please vote in more than just one category. Don't just vote for your friend or your group, take a look at the other categories and do your best to honestly vote for the best in each category. In each category, I took the top three nominees based on the individual number of nominations. With the state and local blogs, the votes were closer and there were more options so I extended it to five.

Not happy with the state of Florida right now? Neither are the Florida Netroots - a network of online activists and bloggers who are working on building up the Democratic Party all across the state. Think of it as our 67 county strategy. We believe Florida will shift Democratic, but in order to do so its going to need a little push. We're willing to give it a shove, but we need your help. Can you spare $8? I've got 8 reasons to support the Florida Netroots:

There are lots of encouraging signs in Florida that make me believe this swing state is turning blue in 2008. What, pray tell, gives me that idea?
Well, for starters, the recent DFA training in Tampa had to be capped due to there being more people wanting to sign up than the venue allowed. There's the fact that the progressive blogosphere in Florida is getting organized. Sites like the Florida Progressive Coalition, Florida Kossacks and Florida Netroots are working on projects like Blog Florida Blue, creating a Florida Netroots Coalition within the state party, the creation of a Florida Progressive Radio Show, and organizing events such as the Netroots luncheon at the Jefferson-Jackson Weekend and a series of Netroots panels at the upcoming state convention.

We're doing it. We're crashing the gates in Florida. We've taken the advice we've read and the lessons we've learned and we're turning that into action. We're fighting to change things. And it's working. No, we aren't kingmakers and we don't have major influence...yet. But we are making things happen. We are breaking down doors. We are crashing the gates.

Wanted to put an idea I had out there for critical review:

Obviously, this is something that's important to us in the Florida Netroots, as this is kinda going to be our brand look.
I'll also make it smaller to fit into folks' sidebars.
Don't hold back - be critical - this is important.

Cross-Posted: Florida Progressive Coalition, Reform Florida's DECs
What can I say? Where can I begin? Today was one hell of a day - and I mean that all in a good way. I went to JJ two years ago, and this was SO much more fun. For starters, I actually knew people. My Dad, Rick Perry and the Van Heydes from the Marion DEC, in addition to Ken Quinnel, gatordem, and many others were all there. Did I mention that other cool people like Karen Thurman, Nancy Pelosi, Dave Aronberg, and others were there, too!?
I could recite the whole day, but that would be ridiculously long - I'll point you to Ken Quinnel's masterful day-long coverage over at Florida Progressive Coalition. Don't worry, I called 911, and the EMT's are taking care of Ken's carpal tunnel as we speak.

I'm headed out of town -- to Hollywood (not that one, the one in Florida), for the Florida Democratic Party's annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. In non-convention years, this is the party's biggest event. To show you how big it is, the keynote speaker is Nancy Pelosi this year.
I'll be seeing a lot of bloggers and Netroots activists there, as we have an official meeting/luncheon with state party officials. This should be a lot of fun and a great way to meet a lot of great people from around the state.
I'll be sending in dispatches from the event and liveblogging the Pelosi event (I think), so check in over at Florida Progressive Coalition for updates.

Also, join the mailing list! I promise you won't get a billion emails a day, just something every now and then.

Having read more and more of the blogs in Florida in recent months, I've come to notice a few significant problems with the progressive blogs in Florida. The combination of these factors -- whatever the reasons behind them, legitimate or not -- hurts both our attempts to change things and our chances at influencing elections and policies in the Sunshine state.
