Special Election

{First, a cheap plug for my blog Senate Guru.}
While I typically focus on Senate races, the special election in New York's 20th Congressional district is an excellent opportunity to stick it to the Republican Party.
NY-20 is a Republican leaning district in voter registration, but has been recently represented by now-Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and even narrowly supported now-President Barack Obama over John McCain.
The Democratic nominee, Scott Murphy, has turned a deficit in the polls into a narrow four-point lead over Republican Jim Tedisco. Momentum is on our side! A victory in this special election wouldn't just be a nice Democratic hold, but, since it is a Republican-leaning district, it would also be a major embarrassment for Republicans, particularly new RNC Chair Michael Steele.
How desperate are Republicans in this race? Well, they're very literally reduced to going with a noun, a verb, and 9-11 in flailingly attacking Murphy. And how loathsome is the Republican nominee? Even the Libertarian candidate, who was booted from the race after - it would appear - Republicans made a concerted effort to get enough Libertarian ballot signatures overturned, has endorsed Scott Murphy. (And it's one hell of an endorsement.)
The special election is this Tuesday! So what can you do to help?
Phone bank for Scott Murphy!
This is a special election, so GOTV is everything. On Monday or Tuesday, if you can spend literally one single hour making calls, that could be the difference in a Republican pick-up versus a Republican embarrassment.

(This diary cross-posted from Daily Kos 11/5/07 afternoon) In the off-year elections of 2005, the surprisingly strong wins by Tim Kaine in Virginia and Jon Corzine in New Jersey were signals of change providing the first indication of the Democratic sweep to come in 2006. Less well noticed, but caught by Our Great Orange Master were the State Legislature pickups by Democrats on Long Island. When momentum builds for change, it manifests itself down-ticket just as well as in the high-profile races. And momentum is out there right now. We’re about to turn a healthy chunk of a red county in the nation’s fourth most populous state blue for the first time in decades. So while you’re watching Kentucky choose a Democratic governor tomorrow, here’s another race to follow.

Turnout is very light here in Marion County's precincts. There aren't very many Dean signs around, but fresh Franks signs have popped up along the SR200 corridor and in Silver Springs Shores and Marion Oaks.
Regardless of what happens with Franks and Dean this evening, I can't wait to crack into and analyze local results, turnout, etc...
We've been testing out a new canvassing technique today, and its working surprisingly well. More on that in my postmortem tommorrow (probably afternoon as I'll probably sleep through the morning :) )

For those who didn't already know, over the last few weeks, I worked on the Mark Ravenscraft for State Senate District 3 campaign. The primary election was Tuesday and we lost, getting only 35% of the vote. Why? Several reasons.

Suzan Franks, candidate for State SD3 chatted with FPC members and others for more than an hour this afternoon. We'd like to thank her for her time, which is precious considering the primary is Tuesday. Here is a transcript of that chat. I cleaned up typos and re-ordered some of the comments to make it more readable.
[KQ] Sorry, I'm running a few minutes late. I wanted to thank Suzan for joining us.
[Suzan] Hi Kenneth
[Suzan] I'm so happy to be here
[KQ] The way I figured this would work is that we would open it up to questions from the other chatters, allowing Suzan time to respond before asking another one.
[Suzan] OK....fire away

FPC will have two chats today with SD3 candidates. At 4 p.m., we will be chatting with Citrus County Democrat Suzan Franks and at 7 p.m., we'll be talking with Tallahassee Democrat Mark Ravenscraft. To participate, simply go here, choose a screen name (pick one that will let me identify you, so I know who is participating) and hit enter chat. Then all you have to do is type your message in the field at the bottom of the page and hit "Say." That's it. This is a very simple chat interface -- we're using that to make things simple and easy and focused on the content, not the bells and whistles. We'll post a transcript later for those who can't make it.
The primary election is Tuesday and news coverage of this race has been sparse, so particularly if you live in this District, which spans from Tallahassee to the edge of Jacksonville all the way down to Ocala and Citrus County, this may be your best chance to get to know the candidates. Join us.

Sophia Diaz-Fonseca, candidate for State HD43 chatted with FPC members and others for more than an hour this morning. We'd like to thank her for her time, which is precious considering the primary is Tuesday. Here is a transcript of that chat. I cleaned up typos and re-ordered some of the comments to make it more readable.
[KQ] Welcome Sophia, thanks for joining us
[SophiaDiazFonseca] Good morning!
[KQ] I figured this would be an open-ended Q&A, where I'll leave it up to other chatters to ask you questions. When they don't step in, I'll ask you questions, if that's okay
[SophiaDiazFonseca] That's fine, let's get started.

(Promoted in order to ask people to donate to their favorite campaign. As always, Florida Democrats need contributions. - promoted by quinnelk)
Here are the websites for the candidates in the special election for Senate District 3. The primary is on June 5 and the general election is June 26. We can win this race...
Both Democrats have PayPal accounts online now and snail-mail addresses for those who are interested in the old-fashioned way. The first reporting period ends today, so if you are going to contribute, today would be a good day to do it. The big donors are holding off until after the primary, so we need every cent you can spare at this point.
Mark T. Ravenscraft (D)
Suzan Franks (D)
I'm not going to link to the Republicans at this point, you can find them. I will have more on them later, though.
(Full disclosure: I am working for the Ravenscraft campaign).

It seems like a given that the Senate District 3 Special Election is a toss-up between Charlie Dean and Dennis Baxley and the Democrats have no chance. This makes no sense. I understand why the Republicans think this, that's what they're supposed to think. They are supposed to be confident and believe they are going to win. Why are Democrats agreeing with them?

House District 49's Special Election probably won't be the last until 2008. Many of you have probably been following the story that State Senator Nancy Argenziano is working very hard to insert herself on the Public Service Commission. Republicans are so sure that she'll get the job, and therefore a State Senate seat will open, that Marco Rubio's chief of staff (whose paid $175K a year) is leaving his job to run for the seat (which, shall we say, pays a whole hell of a lot less.)
As if that weren't enough, right winger State Rep. Dennis Baxley has also announced he'll seek the seat should Argenziano be appointed to the PSC.

Liz Campbell, aided by Tally and Pensacola Voter, is getting some nice coverage over at Daily Kos... and making some money, too.
If you haven't already, go to both diaries, recommend them, and if you have some dough, share some of the wealth with Liz here.

The Escambia County Supervisor of Election's Office will close the books for qualifying by petition in less than one hour.
First to cross the finish line was Elizabeth Campbell.
She has met and exceeded the number of signatures needed to qualify for the primary ballot. At the time Campbell walked the last batch of cards through the door, there was only one other candidate (with only a 1/3 of what he needed) bringing any in.
There is still time for the republican runners to bring in their collected petitions, or they may opt to pay the $1850 filing fee.
I think by dashing all week to meet her deadline for signature collecting, Liz has shown her grit and determination to punch through the barriers and stake a claim. And the entire process only cost $24 to cover the Verification of the signatures in the ECSOE office.
Hum..... completes tasks, and with a modest budget... How charming!

(Elizabeth Campbell was the Democratic challenger during the 2006 election against Benson. She was a newly retired Navy Chief with 22 years of service under her belt, and a dual Masters Degree from Embry Riddle University, and a thirst for continuing to serve her fellow patriots. - promoted by Tampabay Democrat)
There have been a lot of rumors about the Special Election called for the replacement of Holly Benson after she vacated her House seat shortly after being reelected for an appointment by Governor Crist.
Most people here in her district are more than a little upset that she ran on a platform of going to bat for her constituents on Insurance reform. With the Special Session just days away, she jumped ship, and left everyone in the Panhandle hanging with NO ONE to speak up for them in Tallahassee this month.
So far a handful of good ol' boy GOP'ers have lunged at the chance to grab her still warm seat, but the best chance at filling it is coming from a more humble source.
Elizabeth Campbell was the Democratic challenger during the 2006 election against Benson. She was a newly retired Navy Chief with 22 years of service under her belt, and a dual Masters Degree from Embry Riddle University, and a thirst for continuing to serve her fellow patriots.
She was approached to run as the only Democrat in a vastly conservative area and in less than 6 months put together a network of staff, volunteers, and grassroots supporters which net her almost 40% of the vote.
Now that the same seat she ran for was available, Liz Campbell (who had prefiled for the 2008 race) she knew she had a new lease to get what could have been hers, had she had the full two years needed to fund a decent campaign for the District 3 Seat.
With hats flying into the ring, Campbell is gloved up and swinging. Her steadfast base of supporters and volunteers have been burning up the phonelines setting up meetings and fund drives. Her Website, http://LizCampbell20... , has had a record number of hits, and donations have started to roll in.
