On the last day of the 2010 Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature passed HB 1143 - sweeping anti-choice legislation that restricts women's access to reproductive health care and drastically chips away at Roe v. Wade. House Republicans rammed through a measure to require women seeking an abortion to pay for an ultrasound and hear a doctor give a description of the fetus. The cost of an ultrasound exam can vary between $200 and $1,000. The bill also restricts businesses that receive tax credits from providing their employees with health insurance that covers abortion, even if they don't use federal or state subsidies to purchase their plans. This goes far beyond the Hyde Amendment by prohibiting abortion from being covered in private health insurance plans. This attack on women's health care by anti-choice Republicans passed both chambers despite never being vetted through a single committee, and never allowing for public comment. Help us urge Governor Crist to veto HB 1143, which interferes with private health care decisions and restricts private health insurance from offering abortion coverage. HB 1143 currently awaits the Governor's decision. Women will not stand for legislation that takes away our rights and leaves us worse off than we are today. Tell Governor Crist to veto HB 1143.

In my book, The Golden Years...The Florida Legislature, '70s and '80s, I remind readers that anything said by an office holder is public record. However, my experience is that voters will forgive almost anything said in public, or even done, including declaring bankruptcy, enduring adultery, and an occassional ill advised vote. But, public behavior that generally WILL NOT be tolerated, include: 1. Stealing from the public treasury. 2. Breaking your word. 3. A hypocrite--do what I say, not what I do. 4. Voting wrong on incendiary issues, like abortion, pay raises, and immigration. 5. Not voting. Public officials, Caveat Emptor.

From Chris Chiari: Dear Friends,
From the 2000 recount, to the debacle over delegates, Florida has a long, painful history of problems during election season. Who’s to blame? The Republican-Led Florida Legislature.
I am running against the Majority Whip of the Florida House - the very person that secured the votes that got us into the latest delegate mess.
In the last term, my opponent:
- Voted for legislation that discredits evolution and opens the door to intelligent design in school curriculum.
- Violated a woman’s right to privacy by voting to make an ultrasound mandatory prior to exercising a woman’s right to choose.
- Supported legislation criminalizing embryonic stem cell research
- Voted specifically to exclude mental and physical disabilities and sexual orientation from enumerated categories of bullying in anti-bullying legislation.
- Voted to change Florida law to allow people to take their guns to work. We may not all be Florida Democrats, but we all know the story: Voters disenfranchised and a primary in chaos.
On top of that, back in January, 2004, my opponent won the first election in America using black-box voting machines. The result – a contested election and a judge, not voters, choosing the winner.
It gets worse: She is also the Florida Co-Chair of the McCain for Florida campaign.
We may be a state in chaos… We may be a Democratic party in chaos… but we will win in November.
Help me remove a key member of the Florida Republican leadership: Click here to lend me your support.
