An Invitation to Florida's Progressive Bloggers

by: meowmissy

Tue May 08, 2007 at 11:53:44 AM EDT

(Should be a fun and rewarding experience for all - promoted by Tally)

The Florida Democratic Party is hosting a soiree in Hollywood, Florida this June and guess what?  You're the guest of honor!
meowmissy :: An Invitation to Florida's Progressive Bloggers
Back in March, I wrote a diary on Dkos and here on FLA Politics entitled: Florida Democratic Party Meet the Netroots.

In that diary I suggested that the FDP allow the Netroots to have a panel on blogging at the Florida Democratic Party Convention so that we could educate the party and the candidates on who we are, what we do, and how we can work together to help Democrats get elected.

Well, they've taken me up on it and then some!

At the end of April, the FDP invited the Florida Netroots to participate in a conference call to start making plans. Happily, representatives from the Florida Progressive Coalition and Florida Kossacks agreed to join in as well. In addition to planning an event at the FDP convention, they've arranged a special luncheon at the Jefferson-Jackson Weekend just for us!

Here's the invitation, straight from the FDP Communications Director:

Calling Progressive Bloggers: Fire Up the Netroots to "Blog Florida Blue" in '08!

In recognition of the developing relationship between the Party and the Netroots, the Party will host a special lunch at the J-J for Florida's progressive bloggers to discuss ideas to help deliver Florida's 27 electoral votes to the Democratic nominee in 2008. The event is June 9, 12:00-2:00 p.m. at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood. Chair Karen Thurman and Party staff will be in attendance. Tickets are $50, which covers the cost of food, materials and room rental, and are available for purchase at www.fladems.com/jj. Read more about "Blog Florida Blue" at the Florida Kossacks Blog. Bloggers attending the lunch will receive media credentials for the Jefferson Jackson dinner with Speaker Pelosi that evening.

This Jefferson-Jackson Blogger/Netroots Luncheon is, in part, a planning session for bloggers and online activists in Florida to gather ideas and suggestions for a panel at the Florida Democratic Party Convention in October.  You'll be getting input from FDP staff, grassroots activists, and perhaps a few elected officials. Oh, and don't forget the media credentials!  It doesn't come with the fancy dinner, but it will get you in to see Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

So, what are you waiting for? Go buy your tickets!

While you're at it, you're welcome to join the Florida Netroots a group that supports and promotes activism at the local and state level in Florida in order to ensure the election of more Democrats to public office.

Some of the things we aim to do are:

* Educate ourselves and others on how to get more involved in local and state politics
* Establish Meetups between members who reside in the same district
* Work with established Democratic organizations to create an annual Netroots Conference

Whether you're just curious about politics or you're a hard core activist, we want you to help us build a people-powered Netroots organization here in Florida.

Florida Progressives may also want to make blog contributions to the Florida Progressive Coalition, Florida Kossacks, and FLA Politics sites.  We need to continue building our presence online. By working together we can Blog Florida Blue!

Great Job (0.00 / 0)
Awesome work, especially those media credentials.

Not sure the Party understands the term "Progressive" (0.00 / 0)
$50 for "Progressive" bloggers to attend a "soiree" lunch at the "Jefferson-Jackson Dinner"?

Will there be an armagnac tasting?  Some fois gras, maybe?  A reenactment of the Trail of Tears or a Sally Hemmings impersonator?

What are you waiting for?  Go buy your tickets...  You'll be getting input from the FDP staff!

Ha!

"I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle." John Stuart Mill

To be fair ... (0.00 / 0)

The only part of this that came from the FDP is the section in quotes. You can blame me for the rest of the text.

The luncheon itself wasn't my idea and I've decided to treat it as a positive step.

I think giving bloggers press credentials so they can see Nancy Pelosi for free constitutes progress. The only other way a blogger could get in to see her would have been to pay $150 for the dinner.

Kudos to Meowmissy (0.00 / 0)
for getting the ball rolling on this.  You hung in there and made this happen.  We all owe you our thanks for pulling this off!
