Florida Back in the Spotlight

I'm against this move. We're going to lose most of our representation in Denver if this passes.

In an election that '08 is shaping up to be, we may very well have a contested convention. We'll be crying that we basically can't do crap about really deciding who our nominee will be.

That's just my 2 cents though.

Florida wins by moving primary ahead. (0.00 / 0)

The media bump from winning the primary is more important than any delegates, and as such, will make Florida the most prominent state in the process.  In this case, who cares if we have a single delegate if the outcome of the Florida primary selects the next President?  I'd much rather choose the next Prez than look at a bunch of Florida Democrats in Denver wearing buttons and hats.

Secondly, the eventual nominee will run the convention.  Do you really think Clinton or Obama will let Dean refuse to sit Florida?

Remember the old southern saying--a cut dog squeals...or in this case, a cut dog screams.  If Dean held all the cards, he wouldn't be screaming about Florida.  Hopefully, Thurman will realize she is in control and stay strong.  Dean will have no choice but to fold.

Kind of Mixed (0.00 / 0)

I have to admit that I am kind of mixed about the move.  California is making a similar move, and they represent 10% of the nation's population...for years they have had virtually no impact on who will get nominated. 

Personally, I tend to think that the states with the highest populations should have the highest impact on who gets nominated (ie: New York, California, etc.)...this would make a huge difference in who runs our nation. 

On the other side of that coin is the much larger expense for potential candidates to run primaries in those states....all the more reason for publicly funded campaigns ;-)

Overall...the reality is that paper ballot legislation would not have passed were it not for this primary amendment being inserted into it....so yay for a new primary date??!!??

Moving up the Florida vote was a bad idea from the start. It has nothing to do with Dean. But the prospect of having an early Florida vote AND losing votes in Denver is very, very bad.
