The really scary part is to remember that Reagan came to power by defeating a Democratic foe who had previously vanquished a disgraced Republican Party thru an appeal to moral values and national regeneration.
I have to admit to being a pessimistic worry wart.
Until I got off my butt and actually started canvassing for Obama I was afraid that America was too racist to elect him. Now that everyone (happily) proved me wrong on that point, my big fear is that Obama will turn into Carter and get beaten in 2012 by a happy talk spouting lightweight.
Robert Bly pointed out that Reagan's father was an alcoholic and Reagan displayed a classic dysfunctional enabling of inappropriate behavior among the American electorate while president.
Charlie Crist has done the same while governor.
Sure, we can cut property taxes and increase funding for education, no problem.
(I realize that the entire political establishment is guilty to some extent of this phenomenon, but Crist, like Reagan was, is a master of it.)
And now that Crist is jumping ship and running for US Senate, where he won't have to face the ultimate collapse of his misguided policies, I start to worry about him becoming a national political figure.
Does Crist really have a shot at bigger things? Only time will tell.
Certainly the appointment of his seat warmer crony George LeMieux to fill the remainder of Mel Martinez' term as US Senator means he doesn't fear a conservative challene in the Republican primary from Marco Rubio.
He appears to be immune from attacks by Rush Limbaugh. His fund raising ability is phenomenal and will only increase with LeMieux in DC.
Unless something drastic happens in the next legislative session or hurricane season, it looks unlikely that he'll lose his bid for US Senate.
And I wouldn't even think about predicting anything past 2010.
The guy is definitely someone we all need to keep an eye on. |
