(Originally promoted by Mike, who proudly works for the SEIU, which is taking up the cause of this graduate of Miami-Dade Honors College in Florida - promoted by Florida Politics)
(UPDATE BY MIKE: Walter tweets "I'm not being deported! Thank Janet Napolitano at http://action.seiu.org/page/s/thankyoudhs " Thanks to all you who wrote in and made phone calls!) Sometimes, you come across stories that make such a dramatic point, that you can't help but be astonished at the inhumanity of our broken immigration and citizenship laws.
Walter Lara's tale is one of those stories.
When he was only 3 years old, Walter and his family moved to the United States. He worked hard at his studies; he earned a 4.7 GPA in high school, went on to graduate from Miami-Dade Honors College in Florida, and is now pursuing a career in computer technology.
Make that /trying/ to pursue. You see, Walter's an undocumented immigrant, through no fault of his own; remember, he was only 3 years old when he came to America. And right after we celebrate America's 233rd birthday this weekend, Walter will be deported back to Argentina - a country he's never really known. |
| rnoboa :: Walter Lara Needs Your Help - UPDATED! |
Ever since he found out he was facing deportation, Walter's been pounding the halls of Congress, trying to get the Department of Homeland Security to halt the proceedings so that his case can be reviewed with the dilligence it deserves. Walter's senator, Bill Nelson of Florida, has written a letter to Secretary Napolitano urging her to do that, saying that "he has earned the chance to live and work here and call America home." With only five days left, only an order by Secretary Janet Napolitano can halt the deportation. This is where you come in. The Service Employees International Union is running a campaign asking Janet Napolitano for mercy and to reconsider the pitiless act of forcing Walter to leave the only home he's ever known:
Walter Lara is a 23 year-old honor student facing deportation on July 6, 2009. Walter’s family immigrated from Argentina when he was three years old. He has only known life as an American, and proudly declares that "the United States is my home."
U.S. Senator Bill Nelson wrote the Department of Homeland Security on Walter's behalf, requesting that they defer action on Walter's deportation because "he has earned the chance to live and work here and call America home."
Sign onto Sen. Nelson's letter and on Thursday, July 2, 2009, we will deliver Sen. Nelson's letter with your co-signature to the Department of Homeland Security.
The voice mailboxes at DHS are full. If you want to let Janet Napolitano and the Department know that Walter should stay, you can use SEIU's click to call campaign here. I can sympathize with Walter Lara. I'm an immigrant, too. I moved from Puerto Rico when I was 9 years old. Walter's the kind of person that I love seeing in the country I love and call home. We need more people like Walter here; this is a time when the law can only contain justice if it is tempered with mercy. |
