| This is our regular feature where every day I do a post with the top 10 blog posts that I think people should read from the previous day. Posts are included here and ranked based on a combination of originality, focus on Florida, length (longer, more thorough analysis is better), quality of writing and impact of the story. |
| quinnelk :: 10 Stories to Read |
1. Eye on Miami (Gimleteye) - Coral reef advocates in an uproar: "Of the canaries in the climate change coal mine, the coral reef is one of the most visible. A listserve for coral reef scientists and professionals is buzzing with comments that US government agencies and scientists have chosen to downplay, or to play only as politically acceptable, the devastation to coral reefs in Florida."
2. Miami-Dade Dems - Homeless in Alachua County: "As I was barreling up I-75 past Gainesville I believe the FM locked on UF public radio for a while and there was a local story about a big surge of homelessness in Alachua County. I was driving and couldn’t take notes, of course, but I believe they said the number was up 40 percent from last year, and the total was 1,800. Taking care of the homeless is more difficult than usual because donations to charities are off, the report said."
3. Eye on Miami (Gimleteye) - Time Magazine on Florida: Toasted: "The essay is a fine condensation of the quarrels Eyeonmiami reports every day. Here, though, you get an expanded edition: filled with observation of the serial insults to representative democracy that put our state at such jeopardy, and not just Miami."
4. Blast Off! - "G-U-N ... see you real soon!": "As reported here last week, Disney is telling the state of Florida that they're exempt from the state law permitting gun owners to bring their weapons to work. And some of the workers are, well, up in arms about it. (Yes, pun intended.)"
5. Smashed Frog - Sheriff Jack Parker's Inaccurate OffenderWatch: "Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker--currently seeking re-election--has made a new online tool available for citizens seeking information about sex offenders living in the neighborhood. OffenderWatch. The BCSO website describes OffenderWatch as 'the nation's leading sex offender management and community notification tool... (which) provides the most accurate and timely information...' I guess it's all in how one defines accurate."
6. Progress Florida (Steve Price) - We have to do something about Bill Nelson: "By now, anyone possessing a pulse knows that the Dems are selling us out and shredding the 4th Amendment with all this FISA nonsense. Our very own Bill Nelson is among thems that are caveing. This isn't the first time he's screwed us either. Remember the Torture Vote? In fact he's become known for selling the American people out during his Senate career - for what reason, I honestly can't tell; my mind blows a gasket just wondering. It is clearly time to Do Something."
7. FLA Politics - Must be "balanced" ...: "To keep folks interested, Cox Enterprises, Inc. needs to have a close preznit campaign; it likewise serves the company's economic interests to keep its GOPer subscribers happy by not appearing to favor one side over the other. Never forget, it is first, last and always about selling newspapers and making money."
8. madfloridian's Journal - Democrats shouldn't be crossing party lines to help Republican ideology dominate: "The word 'purist' is now replacing the words like 'fringe activists' and 'elitists' that were used against those of us who spoke out in 2003 and 2004."
9. Incertus (Brian) - Greg Cote, however...: "It's never a good sign when a columnist begins by using a bad example."
10. Blast Off! - More fun with Florida law: it's okay for sex offenders to have porn: "I'm not really sure how I feel about this particular case or the ruling, but I do know that the comments on the article are laughable." |
