(Elizabeth Campbell was the Democratic challenger during the 2006 election against Benson. She was a newly retired Navy Chief with 22 years of service under her belt, and a dual Masters Degree from Embry Riddle University, and a thirst for continuing to serve her fellow patriots. - promoted by Tampabay Democrat)
There have been a lot of rumors about the Special Election called for the replacement of Holly Benson after she vacated her House seat shortly after being reelected for an appointment by Governor Crist.
Most people here in her district are more than a little upset that she ran on a platform of going to bat for her constituents on Insurance reform. With the Special Session just days away, she jumped ship, and left everyone in the Panhandle hanging with NO ONE to speak up for them in Tallahassee this month.
So far a handful of good ol' boy GOP'ers have lunged at the chance to grab her still warm seat, but the best chance at filling it is coming from a more humble source.
Elizabeth Campbell was the Democratic challenger during the 2006 election against Benson. She was a newly retired Navy Chief with 22 years of service under her belt, and a dual Masters Degree from Embry Riddle University, and a thirst for continuing to serve her fellow patriots.
She was approached to run as the only Democrat in a vastly conservative area and in less than 6 months put together a network of staff, volunteers, and grassroots supporters which net her almost 40% of the vote.
Now that the same seat she ran for was available, Liz Campbell (who had prefiled for the 2008 race) she knew she had a new lease to get what could have been hers, had she had the full two years needed to fund a decent campaign for the District 3 Seat.
With hats flying into the ring, Campbell is gloved up and swinging. Her steadfast base of supporters and volunteers have been burning up the phonelines setting up meetings and fund drives. Her Website, http://LizCampbell20... , has had a record number of hits, and donations have started to roll in. |

| Locals, both Democrats and Republican, have called voicing support and thanking her for her clean campaigning last round.
As a breath of fresh air in the smoky halls of Northwest Florida, even seasoned politicos have to agree she brings to the table a true sense of service and grassroot values which has beens lacking around these parts for decades.
Rumors abound about possible opponents in the primary, but other than a local TV celebrity and realtor DeeDee Ritchie, everyone else knows Liz will speak up for all the residents and their issues in Tallahassee. Ritchie had a shot at the Fl. House in 98 and moved on to TV land shortly thereafter.
My prediction for the Primary? Ritchie will decline to run because after all, who would be the Belle of the Ball on Martini Night at the Global Grill? Elizabeth Campbell will continue to knock on doors, shake hands and sip coffee with the voters.
On the Republican side, I see 'The Other Brother' Scarborough stomping on Clay Ford, with mass casulties from the other republican hopefuls...
And the end result? Well, after election day, I think Elizabeth Campbell will have walked through all 49 of her precincts, and made just enough of an impression on the regular hardworking folk in this town for them to send one of their own, Campbell, to the State Capitol, so maybe, just maybe, their voices will finally be heard. |
