Impress Everyone

by: Derek Newton

Sun Sep 03, 2006 at 13:00:48 PM EDT

(Go ahead and impress everyone - promoted by Florida Politics)

Alright insiders and political junkies, here's your chance to impress everyone.

After the jump are 10 hot primary campaigns. Pick the winners before the polls open on Tuesday and impress us all with your insight and skill.

Each race is numbered and there's a tie-breaker at the end. Format your answers with the number of the race (1-10) and your pick. I'll post my answers in the comments.

This is intended ONLY for fun and amusement. There's no prize other than improved ego. Good luck!

TIE-BREAKER: What percentage of the vote will GOP candidate Randall Terry get in Senate District 8 against Jim King?

I can tell you 3 of 10 (0.00 / 0)
1 -- Davis vs. Smith will end up Jim Davis.  Neither Democrat inspires enough to encourage a heavy turnout so Davis will slink in.

8 -- District 48.  It's Peter Nehr with Ken Peluso a close second.  Peluso name recognition in district 48 and he's got the PAC's attacking Nehr (2 slander mailers the last 2 days) but the problem is Nehr isn't Peluso.  It'll end up being Palm Harbor Republicans vs. Tarpon Springs Republicans on this vote.

Flaherty is the dark horse of the race.  He's invested a lot in a new web site, campaign videos and has sent a ton of mailers the last few days in an attempt to up his name recognition.  Too late though.

Robin Borland doesn't stand a chance.  A principled Republican not on the take in a district where the other Republicans are on the take and have spent much much more than she has taken in.

10 -- Kim Berfield didn't vote for the phone rate increases, she didn't try to pass legislation as a personal favor of a developer that would take development rules away from counties.  Farkas has too much baggage and if he gets in, he's going to have a bullseye of his legislative corruption for Charlie Justice to keep taking shots at.

My picks (3.00 / 1)
I can only do the ones that I'm familiar with.

Democrat Governor--Davis will take the nomination, I'm going to say by 7 percentage points. Too much concern about Smith and Big Sugar to have him pull off the win.

Senate District 30--Ted Deutch wins, 5 percentage points. If it were an open primary, it would be different. Slosberg's visibility would have been enough to get extra votes to pull him over the top. But with a closed primary and basically only the Democratic base voting, this favors Deutch. Much of the base is way too pissed at Irv Slosberg for his grandstanding. The sad thing is Irv could have easily defeated Deutch no sweat had he kept his ego intact. It will be close, but Deutch wins this one.

House District 86--This is a very tough race to handicap; no one candidate has stood out as the front runner. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Maria Sachs eeks it out by 3 percentage points or less. Seigel could have positioned himself a front runner but his star has seemed to have fallen as of late. He just didn't pull enough endorsements. Joseph Abruzzo will contend but too many people are upset for him abandoning the Palm Beach county commission race without fielding a replacement for him to pull it out. Lerman lacks the temperment to win this. To her credit, she did pull the Palm Beach Post endorsement, but it won't be enough.

The Answers Are ... (0.00 / 0)
1.  Smith
2. Villalobos
3. Deutch
4. ???
5. ???
6. ???
7. Suarez
8. ???
9. Buchanan
10. Berfield

Davis Will Win (0.00 / 0)
1. It ain't necessarily my choice, but Davis will win.  Any Rodmentum that may have exited has been blunted by the "big sugar" counteroffensive by the media - the very same media that said nothing about Jeb (let alone Charlie) being owned by corporate interests, and has said nothing about big sugar's independent expenditures on behalf of Crist.

Should Smith eke out a victory, he will be demolished by the media and Crist - the very definition of an empty suit (and perhaps the only candidate who can make Mel Martinez look substantive (well, just a little)) - will crush him.

More on the rest of the races later.
